What is Self Directed Learning (SDL)?

  “SDL is any increase in knowledge, skill, accomplishment, or personal development that an individual selects and brings about by his or her own efforts using any method in any circumstances at any time” Gibbons (2002)

“a process in which individuals take the initiative, with or with out the help of other, to diagnose their learning needs, formulate learning goals, identify resources for learning, select and implement learning strategies, and evaluate learning outcomes” Knowles (1975)

Within SLS staff have preferred learning styles and or different training and development needs according to the areas of the service in which they work. Staff development will be delivered through a variety of approaches to suit the diverse needs of our staff this will include online self directed learning.
